Taste of the Arctic Spring

Taste of the Arctic Spring Overview

Revel in an Arctic spring with an array of activities from snowmobiling and dog sledding, to ice fishing and igloo building, and experience the traditional Inuit way of life. Get a taste of the Arctic way of life in spring. Travel north to Iqaluit, Nunavut’s capital, from Ottawa on a short 3 hour flight and experience all that an Arctic spring has to offer. Led by Inuit guides who live and breathe the great outdoors, you'll develop a deeper appreciation for the Arctic. Take a traditional ride across the frozen tundra by dog sled, try your hand at building your own igloo, go snowmobiling to explore the terrain, catch some Arctic char while ice fishing, and learn more about Inuit history and culture at Iqaluit's museums and art galleries. Your itinerary combines the best of the early spring season and a few of Iqaluit's top highlights and attractions. Then, after a full day of discovery, relax and keep an eye out for possible northern lights in the evening sky.

About Iqaluit

Capital of Nunavut Population: 6,700 The capital of Nunavut is located on Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island. A legacy of the fact that the community was originally a military airbase built during WWII is that the Iqaluit International Airport is the nexus of a thriving air passenger and cargo industry. Since being named the capital, infrastructure has grown at an amazing rate. Iqaluit offers all of the modern conveniences you could need, from fine dining to shopping, as well as cultural experiences and outdoor adventures. Just outside the city you will find a wealth of natural attractions. The picturesque Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park and River is just a one kilometre walk from Iqaluit. Here, you’ll find Thule archaeological sites, a variety of rare plants, several species of wildlife, and some 40 species of birds. The river is also a great spot to catch Arctic char and the falls make a beautiful backdrop for a picnic.
