ARCTIC SURVIVAL
Arctic survival is taught by Inuit elders and covers traditional skills that have kept people alive in the arctic for thousands of years. The course provides an introduction to the winter landscape and changes through the seasons. It covers different types of snow conditions and how they affect travel and the types of shelter that can be constructed. The building of igloos and other types of shelter are taught and participants will have many opportunities to build and sleep in their own igloos. The basics of navigating the land by both snowmobile/quamotik and on foot provide the information necessary to get back to the closest town with or without a machine. Reading natural indicators in the snow and learning how to keep track of your location in the arctic environment are all part of mastering the skills necessary for navigating the frozen lands. As an additional component of the course we will practice the skills of identifying and tracking animals from small to large across the arctic expanse. The course not only provides the increased confidence to deal with adversity but also an appreciation for the depth and enormous amounts of skill of the Inuit.
