OVERVIEW
Whale watching and snorkeling with Bowhead and Humpback amongst stunning icebergs in Greenland
This photographic wildlife adventure, spanning eight days in total, is centered around viewing, snorkeling or even diving with bowhead and humpback whales in Greenland’s Disko Bay. Surrounded by calving glaciers and floating ice bergs the size of cathedrals, Disko Bay is the winter home to a population bowhead whales. Averaging sixty feet long and ninety tons, bowheads are the only large whales that make their home exclusively in the Arctic. As winter turns to spring and the sea ice around the bay breaks open, these elusive giants gather in the bay before beginning their annual migration north toward Canada’s Northwest passage. In recent years, possibly in response to the warming ocean, large numbers of humpback whales have begun to frequent Disko Bay’s spring waters as well. The combination of these two whale populations creates an unprecedented whale photography adventure. For the more adventurous, we will provide an opportunity to dive or snorkel alongside the whales as they come alongside our vessel. These naturally curious creatures will often venture close to boats and divers, offering spectacular photographic opportunities. There is nothing like sharing the water with a whale in its natural environment.
Arctic Kingdom is excited to return to Greenland, and proud to offer expeditions to Qeqertarsuaq for the first time. We are looking forward to offering this trip, developed specifically to take advantage of new developments in whale migration, to both new and loyal clientele.
