We at Arctic Kingdom take great effort and pride in offering the most varied types of Arctic Animal Adventures. From northern lights to polar bears, from spring trips when there is still ice on the sea and we travel by snowmobiles, to summer trips where we travel primarily by boat to our land-based camps.

Our floe edge trips we find always sell out first and the 2011 Narwhal and Polar Bear Floe Edge Adventure is no exception this year being once again one of our most popular trips. June departures are already 50% sold-out. If you are considering an Arctic trip for 2011 to visit a floe edge - in particular to see the mystical Narwhal, please contact us soon to reserve your spot. Anirniq - Finalist at the 2010 Banff Mountain Film Festival

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is one of the worlds most prestigious adventure film festivals and have selected Brudder Productions short film "Anirniq" as a finalist.

Filmed on location at the floe edge of Pond Inlet with Arctic Kingdom in June of this year, "Anirniq" - Inuktitut for breath - is a short fable about an Inuit man confronting the loss of his father when he was a young boy on his first narwhal hunt. The story explores the Inuit belief that when someone dies their spirit goes into the living creatures around them and thus the Inuit saying: "The great peril of our existence is that our diet consists entirely of souls."

All 'actors' in the film are the very same Inuit guides that assist Arctic Kingdom on the Narwhal and Polar Bear Floe Edge Adventures.

November Newsletter Photograph: the Story

The Pond Inlet floe edge is a line of land-fast ice that stretches from North Baffin Island north to Bylot Island - is not only well known for it's narwhal population that migrates there during the spring months May through July, but also for the polar bears that frequently are seen in and amongst the pack ice.

This month's newsletter image - of a polar bear (and behind her are two cubs) silhouetted on an iceberg with the 2 AM sun shining brightly behind, was photographed at the Pond Inlet floe edge on May 22, 2010.

We were traveling by snowmobile back to Pond Inlet when we spotted movement on the iceberg. Our group of 5 stopped our snowmobiles approximately 50 meters from the iceberg and quietly watched for hours as the mother and cubs would watch us as the second photograph shows. The mother polar bear would lie down with her head in her paws - eyes closed as if completely oblivious to our presence, the cubs would crawl on her back, over her, around her and so on, and peer up at us as they wrestled with one another.

As the sun moved across the sky in an endless streak across the horizon, we watched and observed the cubs until they too lay down nestled under their mothers outstretched body and closed their eyes. We bid adieu to 'polar bear iceberg' and continued on towards Pond Inlet a few hours distant. Smiles all the way home.

You too may enjoy this memorable experience (or one similar to it - as no two experiences are ever the same) on the May or June departures of the Narwhal and Polar Bear Floe Edge Adventure

Arctic Kingdom Polar Expeditions Inc. is fiercely dedicated to creating authentic and awe-inspiring trips to the high Arctic, we are the only company in the world to offer land-based travel experiences and special interest trips for individuals and small private groups. We know the Arctic like no other company and love to share it. Upscale and exclusive, we offer both scheduled trips (set departures) available to anyone and custom expeditions for clients such as Disney, National Geographic, the occasional world-renowned polar explorer and of course, discerning travellers. Our group sizes are small - from 4-12 fellow adventurers. (Any Inuit guide will tell you that a larger group size compromises your ability to feel and see what the Arctic has to offer.)

"Arctic Kingdom - the world's leading company for managing complicated logistics in the North"
- Scott Polar Research Institute

Scheduled Trips - Set Departures
A scheduled trip has a fixed date, fixed itinerary and fixed price where you can join a group of up to 12 fellow adventurers

Private and Custom Trips
A private trip is any trip that is not open to the general public, it therefore has a flexible departure date.
There are three types of private trips:

  1. Block Trips: a block trip is a private trip based on any of our scheduled itineraries, the easiest way to block a trip is to simply take over an existing departure date for your group.
  2. Private Adventures: these are set itineraries that have been pre-planned and run before. Starting prices are based on a minimum private group size of 4-8. While the core architecture of these trips is fixed, tweaking and customizing them can easily be accomplished - see our website for a long list of Private Adventures that include: dog-sledding, skiing, hot air ballooning, a helicopter flight to see Polar Bear dens and cubs, catching arctic char, snorkelling with whales, or building (and sleeping in) an igloo above the Arctic circle.
  3. Private Family Trips: this concept is simple; take one of our trips (scheduled or private) and let us weave-in enriching opportunities for kids, teenagers and adults. There is nowhere like the Arctic, where elders are revered and respected, to bridge a generation gap and create life-long memories.

Custom Expedition Planning
If you can imagine it, we can make it happen. We can do for you what we do for National Geographic, Disney, the military and world-renowned polar explorers. Whether your dream is a full-on expedition to the North Pole or simply (or not quite so simply) to hot air balloon over it, video an elusive Greenland shark, or dive an Arctic shipwreck, we can make it happen. The possibilities are as wide open as the north.
