Dear Traveller,

Happy New Year from all of us at Arctic Kingdom!

We hope you had a fantastic New Year and welcome to 2011! The 2011 season is already upon us with the first expedition - our new luxury Arctic Igloo Dome Camp with helicopter - the Polar Bears and Northern Lights of the Torngat Mountains to depart in late March. By June, we have our ever popular Narwhal and Polar Bear Floe Edge Adventures out of Pond Inlet (there are still spots left!) and the Ultimate Floe Edge Adventure Beluga, Narwhal and Polar Bears out of Arctic Bay, then the Bowhead, Walrus and Inuit Culture of the Foxe Basin in July (see more below). If that wasn't enough, we're then once again heading back to Qiqiktarjuaq in August for the Polar Bears, Bowhead Whales and Glaciers of Baffin Island trip. I will be conducting a live webinar on this location tomorrow (details are below).

Choose your own adventure be it on a dive trip, to a narwhal photography safari, to just taking it easy at the floe edge - from taking the whole family, a father/daughter bonding trip, a photography dream trip, which ever real Arctic Adventure you choose, be it solo or with others, you can be assured it is with a small group, with knowledgeable Inuit and AK guides and leaders, in the utmost of comfort to make sure it is a personal, and unforgettable, life-changing experience. I have a great newsletter today with trip information, videos of polar bears, and much more.., so please grab a coffee or tea, and enjoy the read!

See you in the Arctic! (or call/email me anytime!)

Featured Trip - Bowhead Whales, Walrus and Polar Bears of the Foxe Basin

This months main newsletter image above showcases how herds of walrus float on pans of ice and how we approach by boats within almost arms reach (almost..not quite!). Graham Dickson, Master Dive Instructor and founder of Arctic Kingdom, will lead a small group of divers - maximum 8, on a dive trip from June 27 to July 4th 2011 that they won't soon forget! Based in June/early July when the bowhead whales conglomerate at the floe edge, and when hundreds of walrus can be found floating in the pancake ice covered waters of the Foxe Basindive trip is focused on getting up close with Walrus and Bowhead whales not only 'topside' using local Inuit boats and , but to slip into the water beside both of the Arctic giants. Diving with Walrus and Bowhead whales. Using a variety of techniques, starting with pecialized cages designed and built by Arctic Kingdom, but based on reading the walrus' personalities, we'll be diving alongside them in the open water. Our aim is to get our trip participants the opportunities to obtain split photographs, to full underwater shots.

There are currently still 4 spaces available on the Jun 27-July 4th 2011 dive trip. Book now to go this year.

Non-dive trips are available as well. If diving isn't for you, but you'd like to see and photograph the 'bowhead highway' of bowhead finning, tail slapping, spyhopping, and the walrus herds as well, join one of our 'non-dive trips' in July. This is a great trip for families as well!

Viewing Polar Bears Up Close with Arctic Kingdom 2 Videos

We are asked by photographers and polar bear enthusiasts what our approach is to getting you close to polar bears at eye level... and just how close will you get. Why not show you instead! Have a look at these videos:

Under the supervision of Arctic Kingdom's inuit gudes, we evaluate the polar bears personalities and demeanor and let them come to us. When polar bears approach, our guides can determine the bears condition, and watch for behaviour that indicates curiosity rather than a 'hungry bear'. In most cases, the polar bears we encounter on trips are generally in good spirits as they are well fed on seal, and exhibit curiosity to our presence or in the case of the second video Polar Bear Hunting Seal are completely unaware of our presence.

Polar Bear Approaches Photographers- Video

From the Arctic Kingdom basecamp on the floe edge, we watched a polar bear approach from 2km away, to within 10 meters of where we stood under the supervision of our Inuit guides. You will see the bear approaching out of curiosity, sniffing the air, and how our guide talks to the bear... all while AK participants/photographers snap away and get their 'up close' polar bear shots!

Polar Bear Hunting Seal - Video

This 7min of uncut footage of a polar bear stalking a seal under the ice was taken at 1 AM on the ice floe in May 2010 from the Arctic Kingdom base camp. You can see the polar bear sniffing the ice for the seal den, putting it's head to the ice listening for movement, and finally attempting to break through the seal den.

The polar bear was approximately 500 meters from the camp and did not appear to be aware of the our presence.

Congratulations to Todd Mintz' photo Iceberg Texture taking 3rd place!

Were thrilled to congratulate photographer Todd Mintz, whose photograph Iceberg Texture was recently awarded in the 2010 Los Angeles International Underwater Photography Competition. This is just Todds most recent recognition, his photographs have been awarded in many international competitions. Todd shot this image on a trip with Arctic Kingdom on the Narwhal and Polar Bear Floe Edge Adventure Dive Trip (scheduled this year for May 24-31, 2011), and was kind enough to give us a few words about his experience and background in photography

AK - Specific to the image which was just awarded what was the process of that dive and shoot like? Any insider tips you have for other people interested in underwater photography to improve their work?

TM - The iceberg dive with Arctic Kingdom was one of my most memorable and favourite dives. Slipping through a crack in the ice that our lead Guide Thomas Lennartz has scouted. It was under two icebergs that had been locked in the floe edge ice. I had come to the Arctic to focus on capturing images of Narwhal but after receiving reports from members of our expedition group how fantastic the dive was I knew I had to break away from my search for the Narwhal to dive this site.

AK - How many times have you travelled with AK, and can you let us know a few of your favorite elements of working with us? Is there anything in particular we offer that is a draw for you to travel with us?

TM - This was my first expedition with Arctic Kingdom. I had researched some of the companies that offered travel to the Arctic but I knew I needed to dive.... Arctic Kingdom was the only Expedition company that I saw offered me the opportunity to dive and, dive with the Narwhal. Arctic Kingdom provided great accommodations that made the experience very comfortable. Remember you are camped on the floe edge ice. I think this comfort helps you rejuvenate your energy to tackle the cold water each day. And the great food did not hurt either.

Arctic Kingdom Polar Expeditions Inc. is fiercely dedicated to creating authentic and awe-inspiring trips to the high Arctic, we are the only company in the world to offer land-based travel experiences and special interest trips for individuals and small private groups. We know the Arctic like no other company and love to share it. Upscale and exclusive, we offer both scheduled trips (set departures) available to anyone and custom expeditions for clients such as Disney, National Geographic, the occasional world-renowned polar explorer and of course, discerning travellers. Our group sizes are small - from 4-12 fellow adventurers. (Any Inuit guide will tell you that a larger group size compromises your ability to feel and see what the Arctic has to offer.)

"Arctic Kingdom - the world's leading company for managing complicated logistics in the North"
- Scott Polar Research Institute

Scheduled Trips - Set Departures
A scheduled trip has a fixed date, fixed itinerary and fixed price where you can join a group of up to 12 fellow adventurers

Private and Custom Trips
A private trip is any trip that is not open to the general public, it therefore has a flexible departure date.
There are three types of private trips:

  1. Block Trips: a block trip is a private trip based on any of our scheduled itineraries, the easiest way to block a trip is to simply take over an existing departure date for your group.
  2. Private Adventures: these are set itineraries that have been pre-planned and run before. Starting prices are based on a minimum private group size of 4-8. While the core architecture of these trips is fixed, tweaking and customizing them can easily be accomplished - see our website for a long list of Private Adventures that include: dog-sledding, skiing, hot air ballooning, a helicopter flight to see Polar Bear dens and cubs, catching arctic char, snorkelling with whales, or building (and sleeping in) an igloo above the Arctic circle.
  3. Private Family Trips: this concept is simple; take one of our trips (scheduled or private) and let us weave-in enriching opportunities for kids, teenagers and adults. There is nowhere like the Arctic, where elders are revered and respected, to bridge a generation gap and create life-long memories.

Custom Expedition Planning
If you can imagine it, we can make it happen. We can do for you what we do for National Geographic, Disney, the military and world-renowned polar explorers. Whether your dream is a full-on expedition to the North Pole or simply (or not quite so simply) to hot air balloon over it, video an elusive Greenland shark, or dive an Arctic shipwreck, we can make it happen. The possibilities are as wide open as the north.
