Spotlight on Gear – Canada Goose Clothing

April 22nd, 2011 | By | Filed in AK PRODUCTS & SERVICES, Gear

For over 50 years,Canada Goose has been the leading manufacturer of cold weather clothing. Their products are field tested and relied upon by people living, working, and playing in the world's coldest environments which of course included us! We rely upon all of our gear for safety, comfort, and warmth. While we're happy to provide gear to our clients, many people choose to purchase their own parkas after experiencing how perfectly these jackets perform out on the ice. Arctic Kingdom is a fully licensed Canada Goose dealer, check out our store for a selection of our current offerings and don't hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have regarding sizing, to order, or to inquire about the newest stock we've received. We also offer great deals on pre-worn gear in the off season. We provide only the best gear to our clients, but don't just take our word for it! Here's a little round-up of what some other reviewers have to say about Canada Goose clothing. -
I recently traveled to the top of Mt. Lemmon in SE Arizona during a blizzard. The jackets and parkas worked flawlessly. In fact, the breathability as advertised was most impressive, as I soon forgot I was wearing a jacket due to the interior comfort. I also gave the lighter weight jacket (shell) a walk in driving rain and found it to be both water resistant and comfortable.
Snalla -
These parkas are being used in the most hostile environments that we can get to on the planet, and there’s a good reason for that. Not a single time in the course of wearing one of these, even in -25 degrees C (-13 degrees F) have we been cold. In fact, in most cases we’ve had to pull the zipper down a little, because the down insulation is so effective that the inside of the parka is as warm as you’d expect a well heated living room to be.
Important thing to note - there are a number of online sources which are selling counterfeit Canada Goose clothing. While the price point on this gear can seem a little high, deals are available. It's essential to know you are purchasing through a reputable source! Canada Goose offers some useful information on their site to help you avoid this danger as fakes do not provide nearly the same protection as the genuine article.

Holiday Shopping, Polar Bear Style

December 10th, 2010 | By | Filed in AK PRODUCTS & SERVICES, Gear

Once more 'tis the season of stalking crowded streets (and exploring far corners of the internet) in search of that perfect gift for family and friends. It's also a great time to consider supporting non-profit groups working towards causes we feel passionately about, such as animal conservation. One such group, Polar Bears International offers an 'adopt a polar bear' project. With four different levels of support starting at just $25, this is both an affordable and meaningful gift.  You can also become a member of their organization for $50, or make a contribution at any time during the year - now's a great time as donations are being matched dollar-for-dollar through Dec. Other non-profit groups you may consider supporting are The Polar Conservation Organization, The Nature Conservatory, the World Wildlife Fund, and Defenders of Wildlife. Some of these organizations also offer all kinds of animal 'adoptions' from belugas to snow leopards. If you prefer a physical gift, but would like to stay away from the larger stores, you could consider looking into Etsy. Etsy's an online marketplace specializing in hand-made crafts, jewelery, art, and clothing as well as vintage items. I recommend focusing a targeted search for what you're looking for - otherwise you risk looking up from the computer and realizing you've lost hours window shopping through countless stores filled with possibly gifts, ornaments shaped like polar bears and beluga whales, narwhal necklaces,  and illustrated prints of narwhal knitting a sock (a new kind of animal behavior?) as well as shirts featuring our favorite types of whales. Not to mention adorable hand-made bear hats for children. Arctic Kingdom also maintains our own store online, featuring some very useful  items.  We have brand new 2011 Canada Goose outerwear arriving weekly, very ideal for winter adventures of all kinds. I also can't recommend more highly the book Face to Face, Arctic Portraits, bringing together pioneering polar photographic images and modern portraiture in a beautiful art coffee table book. It's a terrific gift for anyone interested in the history of polar exploration and photographic documentary work.

Arctic Kingdom Featured for use of Technology

Expedition Manager Thomas Lennartz takes advantage of our in-the-field communications

A case study on Arctic Kingdom is currently featured on Intel Canada's home page as part of their series of 'Success Stories', discussing how small businesses in Canada are embracing technology to increase productivity, solve problems, and push forward innovation. From the case study -
Arctic Kingdom depends on mobile technology solutions, supported by a dependable network server infrastructure powered exclusively by Intel, to keep expedition leaders and travelers informed and safe. Arctic Kingdom Marine Expeditions Inc. started in 1999 when Graham Dickson led the first expedition to dive with walruses and bowhead whales in the arctic. Within a few short years, the tourism company expanded from offering land-based arctic tours and dive trips to supporting film and television crews working in the North, including location management for Disneynature’s Oceans. In addition, Arctic Kingdom works with specialists in polar science from around the world including managing research campaigns for the Alfred Wegner Institute in Germany, Environment Canada, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and the University of Alberta. To ensure ongoing communication links with head office and other emergency services, Arctic Kingdom sets up its own IT infrastructure in the camps to support satellite phones, GPS data, ice mapping, SMS messages and even blog or Twitter updates. They have also set up post-production blackout tents for precise colour-corrected monitors.
You can download the study, to read more about the specifics of some of the tech gear we rely on in the field, why we choose it, and how well it holds up in the specific conditions in which we work. (Download will require Adobe reader, free and available here if you don't have it.)

Airplane Recovery in Antarctica: Part 2

June 13th, 2010 | By | Filed in Gear, Projects, Recent Trips

As promised, here is the video footage of the airplane recovery operation in Queen Maude Land, Antarctica that Arctic Kingdom collaborated on with Katabatic Consulting and Kenn Borek Air. I love this video, because it really gives a sense of the scope of the operation, which involved rescuing, repairing and flying a downed plane from its location on a remote Antarctic plateau 3,300 meters above sea level. YouTube Preview Image Arctic Kingdom provided the camp infrastructure, facilitating Katabatic's onsite repair and salvage operation and providing the necessary equipment for a successful outcome.

AK Outfits Antarctic Airplane Recovery

June 10th, 2010 | By | Filed in Gear, Projects, TRIPS

We recently collaborated with Katabatic Medical Consulting and Kenn Borek Air Ltd. on the salvage of a crash-landed DC-3. Located at a site over 3,300 meters above sea level in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica, the remote crash site presented a number of challenges, including the logistical puzzle of supplying an operation at such a remote and location. Mike Tayloe of Katabatic called upon Arctic Kingdom to outfit the mission. "We had very specific needs and very tight schedule," Tayloe notes. "Arctic Kingdom was able to facilitate any and everything we asked for, supplying the appropriate equipment to support Katabatic Consulting's needs for a successful project outcome." Based on Katabatic's specifications Arctic Kingdom was able to procure, pack and ship the necessary equipment -- including tents from the High Arctic -- in under three weeks. This sort of world-wide logistical management is what we specialize in, ensuring that every one of our expeditions is outfitted on time and on budget, without compromising safety or quality. Tune in tomorrow for video footage of the recovery operation!
